11 Shows to Catch During Northside 2014
MisterWives 2013 by Laura Baker-Finch
Brooklyn, New York -- Northside Festival promises over 400 (!!) bands will play across Brooklyn this June 12-15, so it is completely understandable if you are a bit overwhelmed. As always though, tough schedule decisions are our forte here at Cultivora. From more well-known acts (The War on Drugs, CHVRCHES, Beirut, and Sharon Van Etten) to up-and-comers ripe for discovery (MisterWives, Syd Arthur, Courtney Barnett) and a few that fall in between, we broke down 11 of our most-anticipated Northside shows to take a bit of the pressure off your scheduling process.
Check out the shows below - complete with ticket links, times, and music videos - then download the new Northside Brooklyn mobile app to have the full schedule in the palm of your hand.
Thursday June 12
Scenic Presents: Titus Andronicus + Eagulls
New Jersey's indie punk rockers Titus Andronicus will ensure your ears ring throughout the rest of Northside. Scenic will also bring Eagulls, D'NT, and Low Fat Getting High to the Warsaw Thursday night - don't miss it.
Palladia & VH1 House: Fort Lean + Syd Arthur
Knitting Factory Brooklyn, 8pm-12:30pm
Sure Fort Lean is the 'headliner' of this show, but we can't help but be more excited for the psychedelic sounds of Canterbury's Syd Arthur. Their set will most likely focus on Sound Mirror, their sophomore album released last week in the US, but fingers crossed we'll hear "Ode To The Summer" as well. Kevin Morby and a set by VH1 & You Oughta Know's "Make a Band Famous" winner will also perform.
Sharon Van Etten
When Northside released their first phase lineup, Sharon Van Etten was hands down the standout act. The discovery-based fest has added some other big names over the past few months, but Van Etten (with fellow BK-based singer songwriter Shilpa Ray as support) is sure to draw a headliner-sized crowd Thursday night.
Friday June 13
The War on Drugs
50 Kent, 5-11pm
Wondering what the hell the venue 50 Kent is? No, it's not a a new DIY space to replace 285 Kent. No, it's not an empty event space at that street address. 50 Kent is the new name for Williamsburg Park, where you can expect waterfront shows all summer long. Breaking in the 'new' venue will be The War on Drugs, Woods, and Julianna Barwick Friday night.
Albert Hammond, Jr. + Drowners
Music Hall of Williamsburg, 8-11pm
Didn't get enough of Albert and Drowners at Governors Ball over the weekend? See The Strokes guitarist and that new hip band that's sort of British and sort of American for a second round in the more intimate (and less sunny) MHOW.
Pitchfork Presents: Perfect Pussy
Saint Vitus, 8pm-12:30am
Everyone's favorite new punk band, new female-fronted band, and new band with the best damn name, Perfect Pussy will headline a killer night at Greenpoint metal venue Saint Vitus. Joining them will be Hop Along, Pleasure Leftists, and Frankie Cosomos.
Saturday June 14
Wild Honey Pie Presents: MisterWives + Body Language
Brooklyn Bowl, 6pm-1am
There's quite a long lineup hitting Brooklyn Bowl Saturday night, starting with Yellerkin and running through Canon Logic, Step Rockets, Body Language, MisterWives, and E-303 throughout the night. But if you go for one band only, make sure it is MisterWives (scheduled for a midnight time slot). Every time we've seen this "Soul/Dance/Pop/Folk" band (on purpose or by accident), a crowd-wide dance party has ensued.
T Presents & Brooklyn Bazaar Present: Baths
Brooklyn Bazaar, 7-11:30pm
Baths' beats are haunting, yet still manage to be totally danceable. Get your dance on in between shopping local vendors, playing games, or eating tacos around the Bazaar with Baths, American Royalty, and Beacon.
Courtney Barnett + Benjamin Booker
Music Hall of Williamsburg, 8-11:30pm
If you just rhetorically asked your computer, another show at Music Hall of Williamsburg?, I swear we're not being paid by MHOW to send our readers there - they just happen to have a killer Northside lineup, Moving on... Australia's Courtney Barnett will ensure your night is as chilled out as it can be on a Saturday in Williamsburg.
Beirut + Ratking
50 Kent, 7-11pm
Beirut will bring weird instruments and unexpected support (Ratking? Malang Jobarteh?) to new venue 50 Kent Saturday for a night that may be your only chance to see Zack Condon for a while. Don't quote me on that, I just don't see Beirut touring too often these days.
Sunday June 15
McCarren Park, 4-8pm
Free with Music Badge
I prefer to spend my Sunday afternoons outside in parks, so this CHVRCHES show in McCarren Park is right up my alley (... and the music's not half bad either). These Scotts are no doubt the draw to McCarren Park on Sunday, but make sure to arrive early for Hunters and The Range as well.
