Austin, Texas -- SXSW is known first and foremost as the most seminal music industry event each year since its beginnings in the late 1980s. A few years later, the conference / festival became an equally important platform for cutting-edge technologies and forward-thinking ideas in film. Thousands from each components' respective industries flock to Austin each March and they'll now be joined by an unlikely addition, sports.

SXSports will take place March 7-9 of SXSW's 10 days and will feature film screenings and panel discussions about the world of sports and sports media. ESPN's Nate Silver and Bill Simmons are slated to headline the event with a discussion of Media & The Personal Brand. The event will be open to all Interactive and Film registrants.

Rebecca Feferman, head of Film Media Relations & Programmer at SXSW, hopes "to connect the sports world with our passionate audience of early adopters, culture nuts, digital creatives, and so much more." Her statement suggests the sports industry can benefit from the creatives that tend to flock to the event and will align more with the interactive and film components than the "next-big-thing" discovery happening at countless music showcases across the city.

More SXSports announcements will come in November, though the addition of Silver and Simmons came with the release of a few just-announced events:
