New York City -- The annual CBGB Music & Film Festival returns to NYC October 8 and brings with it not only a stellar free concert in Times Square featuring the likes of Jane's Addiction, Devo, and Surfer Blood, but also an assortment of worthwhile shows and events scattered around the town. To help you plan your five-day stay in the greatest city in the world (we're biased, can you tell?), here are Cultivora's top 5 picks for events happening outside of the CBGB main event.

5. Lily & The Parlour Tricks

Over the last few years, Lily & the Parlour Tricks have taken it upon themselves to tear up the New York music scene with a combination of soulful, three-part harmonies, a gritty blues-rock base, and futuristic effect-driven guitar work. They'll headline a 21+ Wednesday night show at The Knitting Factory also featuring Rocket & The Ghost and Mother Feather. Tickets are currently on-sale for $10.

4. Daniel Lanois Film Screening

For over thirty years, recording legend and frequent Brian Eno-collaborator Daniel Lanois has produced albums for huge artists like Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, and Emmylou Harris with his crowning achievement coming in the form of U2's landmark album The Joshua Tree. Lanois is releasing a solo album this year entitled Flesh and Machine, for which he has collaborated with The Modern School of Film to create an audial/visual experience. At CBGB, he will host a Q&A before screening clips from the film at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema Wednesday night. Tickets are currently on-sale for $15.

3. Wussy

Wussy's indie folk rock has garnered a lot of critical praise over the years even though the band never managed to break through to a bigger audience. Controversial music critic Robert Christgau once said, "Wussy have been the best band in America since they released the first of their five superb albums in 2005." They'll headline a Friday night show at The Knitting Factory with Handsome Jack and Making Movies supporting. Tickets are currently on-sale for $10.

2. Duff McKagan Q&A

This event will feature some true insight into the life of a (former) rock 'n' roll superstar: Duff McKagan, primary bassist for Guns 'N' Roses in the '80s, will take part in a Q&A in between showing clips from the upcoming film based on his autobiography It's So Easy and Other Lies. Michael Alago, former-club promoter and executive for labels like Elektra and Geffen, will also participate in the Q&A. Tickets to this event are available for $20.

1. Billy Idol Keynote Interview

This event features both a keynote interview conducted by former MTV VJ Timothy Sommer and a short acoustic performance from Mr. Idol himself. There will also be performances from Walking Papers, Ex-Cops, and The Skins. Tickets for this event are currently available for $30.
