SXSW is, of course, about the music - but that doesn't mean audience members are blind to other facets of a performance besides the quality of the music itself. If I'm face-level with your barely-covered behind during your set, I'm probably going to remember something else more vividly than what song you were singing.

These shorts are forever engraved in my mind. Dance on !!!, dance on.

  • Best Guest - Dev Hynes during Solange's Set

Guest aside, Solange's set at The Hype Hotel is up on my list of favorites from the week. But I've always been partial to Mr. Hynes or, as he's oftentimes more commonly known, Blood Orange. The pairing can't be beat.

  • Best Whiskers - John Paul Pitts of Surfer Blood

I'm not really sure why J.P. was sporting the cat look during Surfer Blood's set at The Warner Sound Showcase, but I'm glad he was.

  • Best Sex, Drugs & Rock n' Roll Moment: Mario Cuomo of The Orwells

In case you haven't heard, The Orwells set at Aquarium Drunkard Party at The Hype Hotel ended with a frightful audience and a sad sound guy. If you're heading to an Orwells show soon, here's a heads up: watch out for microphones. They can and will be thrown into the audience if their set is cut early.

Tantrum or Rock n' Roll - you decide.

  • Best Scream - Alex Edkins of METZ

METZ get five stars for their grunge-punk performance at the A.V. Club Day Party, a rating they'd receive even if the only factor was Alex's scream. Rock on.

  • Best Only-Slightly-Stereotypical Use of a Floor Tom - Danielle of Haim

It has become the norm for lead vocalists to utilize a floor tom during live shows if only to not be left out during lyric-less sections of songs - Flavorwire even dedicated a trend article to the fad after SXSW two years ago. Needless to say I was a little weary of the floor tom on stage with the Haim sisters.

But the strength of the trio's set-ending collective drum solo and the fact Danielle was far from lacking things to do on stage when not singing - I can't even think of another full female rock group who can shred as hard as her - pushed my floor tom distrust aside. It rocked.

  • Best Hair - Guards

I felt right at home with my long brunette locks during Guards' set at The Warner Sound Showcase. Richie's earned-ease with his guitar and the way his hair moved as he played blurred the lines between talent-envy and hair-envy.

  • Best Chill-Inducing Voice: Mary C

I know I said this slideshow was about the non-musical elements of SXSW, but it just seemed unfair to leave out Mary C and her soulful voice out of a 'Bests of SXSW' list.
