Bumbershoot 2014 Announces Kickoff Events
Flatstock 2013 by Kelsey Stoulil
Seattle, Washington -- Like every headliner needs an opening band to get the crowd going, it only makes sense that a festival hosts kickoff events to get attendees ready for the weekend. Bumbershoot has the right idea, and they've just announced four kickoff events that showcase the artsy side of its 2014 festival.
The events take place on Friday, August 29, in time for the August 30-September 1 festival, and are all free for the general public.
At 3pm, head to the Visual Arts Public Preview at the Fisher & Fountain Lawn Pavilions, to see the festival's visual art exhibits before anyone else. For this year's show, curators brought together over 100 artists who explore the concepts of beginnings, middles, and ends, through installations and performance as well as traditional media. Bumbershoot is teasing that some of them might still be lingering in the galleries during the preview.
You can attend the Mayor's Arts Awards at Fisher Green at 4pm, where Seattle's Mayor Ed Murray will recognize six Seattle-based artists and art organizations for their positive contributions to the city.
At 5, it's time for a drink. Head over to the Solo Bar for the official Pre-Flatstock Happy Hour, where you can have a drink and talk art with all of the Seattle-based artists contributing to the Flatstock Poster show at Bumbershoot with the opportunity to buy some prints.
Finally, at 7pm the 1Reel Film Festival will host a preview at the SIFF Film Center. The festival chose their top seven shorts from different genres and categories to give you a taste of what's to come over the weekend.

If you're going to the festival, the kickoff events are sure to get you pumped for the weekend. If you're in the Seattle area but for some reason aren't planning on hitting up Bumbershoot, the kickoff events are a fun, free way to experience a taste of the festival. That said, tickets for the weekend are still on sale.
