Exclusive Photos: On The Road With American Football
American Football’s reunion will take them to New York City for 3 shows at Webster Hall, it’ll see them play 4 nights in a row in Los Angeles, and then again over New Years Eve in Chicago, but that doesn't mean they broke their 15-year hiatus in a major city or in front of a sold-out crowd. They broke it in the town of their record label Polyvinyl, the town of the now iconic album house, the town where it all began for Mike Kinsella, Steve Holmes, and Steve Lamos as American Football - Champaign-Urbana, Illinois.
I joined the trio along with added bassist for the reunion Nate Kinsella for their first official reunion show at Pygmalion Festival, from the final rehearsal in Chicago to the Taco Bell-fueled road trip back three days later. Along the way we drove through cornfields, took a tour of the Polyvinyl headquarters, air drummed to CHVRCHES, laughed our way through a Van Halen-heavy DJ set, took a trip down memory lane through Champaign-Urbana, met up with the whole AF crew (booking agent Justin Bridgewater, manager Chase Igliori, front of house Jason Cupp, and Polyvinyl's Matt Lunsford, Darcy Lunsford, and Seth Hubbard), and then, of course, there was the show itself.
I couldn’t think of a better way to capture the reunion than in a format beloved in the year of their album release - the disposable camera. I equipped the Kinsella's, Steve's, their guitar tech and stage manager Mike Garzon, and myself (along with a Polaroid) with Kodak FUN SAVERS, here’s what happened...
