FYF Goes Back to Basics with Fanzine Contest

posted by Alexandra Bauer on August 02, 2013

Los Angeles, California -- With only three weeks to go until FYF Fest brings together musicians, comedians, and fans in Los Angeles State Historic Park, the 10th anniversary of FYF is certainly getting ready to rumble.

Don't have tickets yet to the August 24-25 festival? FYF wants to take you away form the digital age, in which information can take an ephemeral form in a variety of mediums, back to the basics in the form of a Fanzine Contest.

For those of you who may not know what a fanzine is, the simplest way to describe it is:
a fan (you) + a magazine = a fanzine, et voila!

The idea behind this theme stems from the ingenuity of fanzines themselves. Just like a great record, a fanzine encumbers a work of art that invites you to transcend into the minds of the people who made them. For this contest, you can make the fanzine about anything from flamingos to grilled cheese and the ocean. Just as long as it represents you. Just make sure to have it postmarked by August 8 as the winner will be notified August 15.

For ideas on how to go about creating one, they have you covered with easy-to-read and entertaining instructions.

The Prizes: As a reward, the grand prize will be five V.I.P. passes to FYF Fest 2013, plus a $500 gift certificate to Origami Vinyl's on-site FYF record store. The three runner-ups will each get a four-pack of General Admission tickets, so feel free to make the zine a group activity.

For more information about the comedy and music lineup, we already have you covered. But, before you go scroll down for the full lineup below, here's a quick fun fact:

"The entire FYF Fest universe started with a tiny fanzine
called the Blacklist, made by founder Sean Carlson and his friends and distributed by hand across the U.S.A. (Thanks to the tour vans, helpful bands and couches to crash on that made that happen!)"
-Sean Carlson, FYF's Creator
