Introducing Cultivora's Guide to CBGB Festival 2013

posted by Laura Baker-Finch on August 29, 2013

New York City -- Even though the venue itself has transformed into a John Varvatos outpost, CBGB remains hallowed ground for American Punk, New Wave, and Hardcore - despite the name actually standing for Country, Bluegrass, and Blues. In honor of the decades between the Ramones, Television, and Patti Smith Group all gracing its stage to the club's closing in 2006, the festival of the eponymous name aims to encapsulate and celebrate all that made CBGB the "Home of Underground Rock."

Now in its sophomore year, the CBGB Festival has moved a few months later and has replaced last year's Spirits component with a heavier emphasis on the music showcases, film screenings, and the conferences of both. Over the festival's five days, they'll showcase 700 performers across 150 Manhattan and Brooklyn venues at CBGB-run events and shows curated by music taste-makers, labels, and brands. Film lovers will enjoy 120 film screenings of the best rock films and documentaries ever made, including some notable debuts.

As New Yorkers, we've compiled an extensive festival guide to CBGB that includes festival insights, travel tips, and recommendations for where to eat, sleep, shop, and party. Our insights cover everything from the badge prices and options to what the weather will be like and our travel tips cover both getting to New York City and getting around once you've arrived. The restaurants, hotels, stores, bars, and venues we chose to include focus on the five neighborhoods in which the majority of CBGB's official venues, for both music and film, reside. Our listings are thus organized by these hoods: Lower East Side, East Village, Greenwich Village, Williamsburg, Flatiron, and the West Side.

Whether you're already familiar with the city or not, you can use our guide to find the best spots relative to the festival and perfect your skills at cruising around the city streets like a local.

Grab our guide and your leather jacket and we'll see you at the festival!
