Music Monday Playlist: The Best Crush Songs

Valentine's Day is fast approaching and there's no better way to get in the mood than listening to songs about that pre-love phase, the crush. It can lead to heartbreak or love, pleasure or pain, but one thing remains true - the crush crusade leads to some pretty amazing songs - a few to which we've dedicated this Music Monday playlist.

The playlist spans decades and genres from the era of Peter Frampton ("Baby, I Love Your Way") and Prince ("I Wanna Be Your Lover"), through 90s crushers Weezer ("El Scorcho"), Lil' Kim and Notorious B.I.G ("Crush On You"), and The Cardigans ("Lovefool"), all the way up to Karen O's crush-dedicated album of 2014 and newcomer B├śRNS ("Electric Love).

Though decades aren't the only way our playlist can be split. Some songs tell stories of encounters (Blink 182's "The Rock Show" and "Lola" by The Kinks) and forbidden crushes ("Jessie's Girl" by Rick Springfield), while others talk about that frustration as you wait for the object of your crush's answer to your love (Tame Impala's aptly-named "Why Won't You Make Up Your Mind?" and Savage Garden's "I Want You").

There are as many melancholy crush songs in the vein of The Smith's "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" and "Maps" by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, as there are happy endings (thanks Paramore with "The Only Exception") and the oh-so-desired crush that isn't one-sided ("Closer" by Tegan and Sara and "Heartbeats" from The Knife).

Of course you'll also find the perfect songs to tell that special someone in your life that you're crushing on them. Look no further than Cat Power's "Sea of Love," Frank Ocean's "Thinkin Bout You," or SWV and Missy Elliot's "Can We," just make sure you're ready to "get kinky tonight" if you go with the latter...
