Northside 2014 Mini Guide: Williamsburg and Greenpoint
Greenpoint by Leonard Zhukovsky
Brooklyn, New York -- Northside Festival will take over Williamsburg and Greenpoint for the sixth time this June 12-19 to answer "what's next?" in Brooklyn and beyond. The festival - divided into Music, Film, Innovation, and Trade Show components - takes place at multiple venues in the borough that always has its finger on the pulse of the next big thing.
During Northside Music, festivalgoers can jump between venues to see acts like The War on Drugs, Beirut, CHVRCHES, Sharon Van Etten, Fuck Buttons, Titus Andronicus, Beach Fossils, Courtney Barnett, Omar Souleyman, Dan Croll, Eagulls, Mas Ysa, and so many more (peep our most-anticipated acts to help you decide). Tastemakers Captured Tracks, AD Hoc, NYC Popfest, The Deli Magazine, and BrooklynVegan are just a few of the brands that'll put on their curation hats during the festival.
We've had various guides covering New York City (Gov Ball, CBGB, CMJ), but we thought Northside deserved its own as well. Read on for a few of our favorite recommendations in Williamsburg and Greenpoint, including the spots to eat late at night, where to buy the records of Northside artists, the convenient hotels to rest your head, and a few day time explorations to fill in set gaps. When you're done, scroll all the way down for the festival's full lineup - and make sure to download the app to customize your schedule.
Calexico (645 Manhattan Avenue)
As is the town of its namesake, Calexico is on the border of Mexican and Californian. Watch out for their Chipotle “Crack” Sauce - it’s addictive. 11:30-2am Mon-Wed; 11:30-3am Thurs-Sat.
The Meatball Shop (170 Bedford Avenue)
The build-your-own-meal menu and 6 kinds of balls - a veggie option, too - make for unlimited options. Don't deprive yourself of the daily jello shot or ice cream sandwiches. 12pm-2am Sun-Thurs; 12pm-4am Fri-Sat.
Vinnie’s Pizzeria (148 Bedford Avenue)
Vinnie’s offers delicious, out-of-the-box pies that are as delicious as they are unusual. Try the avocado quesadilla pizza or play it safe with a plain cheese slice. 10-12am Sun-Thurs; 10-3am Fri-Sat.
Northern Territory (12 Franklin Street)
As one of Greenpoint’s most recent additions, this Australian restaurant is giving neighboring rooftop bars a run for their money in both view and food quality. 5pm-12am Mon-Fri; 5pm-2am Sat-Sun.
Cafe Colette (79 Berry Street)
Treat yourself to a classic cocktail, full meal, sharable appetizers, or weekend brunch at Cafe Colette, where you can dine in the cozy garden, dining room, or at the bar. 11-12am Mon-Thurs; 10-1am Fri-Sun.
Smorgasburg (East River State Park)
Foodies congregate on Saturdays at this outdoor market to sample offerings from some of the area’s best food trucks and vendors. Saturdays 11am-6pm.
Wythe Hotel (80 Wythe Avenue)
This converted factory has open, airy, loft-style rooms with exposed brick and striking Manhattan views. It also features a sixth floor bar, The Ides, which is quickly becoming a go-to drinking destination in Brooklyn.
King & Grove (160 North 12th Street)
King & Grove features a pool area with private cabanas, a 360-degree rooftop bar with views of the Manhattan skyline, and a sleek architectural design to pair with its bright, spacious, and modern rooms. Stop in the lobby for a meal or to rent a bicycle.
Rough Trade (64 North 9th Street)
UK's Rough Trade is a new addition to Brooklyn's record store scene, and a welcomed one at that. In addition to records, the store has quite an extensive collection of music books plus an attached venue.
Species By The Thousands (171 South 4th Street)
Cult Admirers have followed this brand from retail outlets like Urban Outfitters to its first brick and mortar shop, where sterling silver and brass handcrafted jewelry is displayed among apothecary items and folk craft-inspired home wares.
Artists & Fleas (70 North 7th Street)
This indoor treasure trove, only open on weekends, features a rotating selection of vintage and artisan items. Often seen as an extension of Brooklyn Flea's Sunday market, Artists & Fleas has a lot more to offer - and is open year round.
Permanent Records (181 Franklin Street)
This record store may have a smaller selection than surrounding stores, but they definitely prove quality is more important than quantity. With a vinyl-listening station, prepare to take your time at Permanent Records.
The Gutter (200 North 14th Street)
This 21+ vintage bowling alley offers 12 craft brew taps and is open nightly until 4am, should you want to indulge in a late-night game of bowling. At only $7 per game and $3 for shoe rental, The Gutter is a welcome change from the usual barhopping.
Brooklyn Brewery (79 North 11th Street)
While the Brooklyn Brewery's primary purpose is to make beer, at the end of the week it opens its doors to visitors who come to enjoy cheap brews and the lively atmosphere. Take a tour of the brewery while learning about the beer-making process.
