New York City -- It's that time of year again music lovers, Record Store Day 2014 is coming up on Saturday, April 19! Turn your Spotify, 8tracks, Pandora, and iTunes for a day and join fellow audiophiles (plus official ambassador Chuck D) at your local independent record stores for the only holiday where it's not only acceptable but encouraged to buy yourself presents.
Some notable RSD releases include Nirvana's 1994 single "Pennyroyal Tea," The Long Goodbye live album from LCD Soundsystem, the first-ever reissue of Joy Division's debut EP An Ideal for Living, The Flaming Lips' 24-hour song "7 Skies H3," reissues of Outkast's Southernplayalistitcadillacmuzik, A David Bowie 7-inch 1984 picture disc, and four limited-edition releases from Subpop's Mudhoney, Pissed Jeans, Notwist, and Chad VanGaalen. You should also keep your eyes out for specials from Tame Impala, Bruce Springsteen, Haim, Green Day, Jay Z and Linkin Park, R.E.M, plus the new supergroup The Snow (Wild Nothing, Beach Fossils, and Holograms).
Record Store Day isn't your usual Saturday of vinyl-hunting, expect long lines, an early alarm, and plenty of elbowing at the crates to find your RSD releases of choice. If you're in New York City or Brooklyn, stay tuned next week for our favorite record stores by neighborhood. Until then, start planning your RSD wish list (or shopping list) with the official listings.
