Red Bull Music Academy Heads to Tokyo With 60 Artists

posted by Alyssa Buffenstein on July 10, 2014

Tokyo, Japan -- Red Bull Music Academy has revealed the 60 artists that will participate in the 2014 edition of the Academy in Tokyo. Artists were narrowed down from an applicant pool of over 6,000, and will participate in lectures and workshops, work in custom built studios, and perform throughout Tokyo in two sessions this October and November - scroll down to see the full list of artists.

The Tokyo Academy will host artists from 34 countries around the world, spanning different genres, styles, skill levels, methodologies, and cultural backgrounds - from the experimental noise of Istanbul's Ipek Gorgun, to the "Island life music" of Paris' Lafawndah, to "krautrock-tinged house" by Tokyo's Sapphire Slows.

Eight of the 2014 Academy participants hail from the US, including Deradoorian (ex-Dirty Projectors), Nightfeelings (ex-Teengirl Fantasy), and longtime Le1f collaborator Boody. For the first time, representatives were chosen from Egypt and Kenya - producer/singer/DJ Bosaina, and DJ Blinky Bill, respectively.

The Academy also unveiled a new website to help you get to know this year's artists. We hope you don't have anything important to do right now, because the interactive, emoji-filled page has more click-bait than Buzzfeed, and is filled with fun facts about the history of Red Bull Music Academy and this year's participants.

And in alumni news, RBMA has premiered the trailer for a documentary called "Layered Sounds", about 2011 Academy grad Yosi Horikawa's process of taking field recordings on the Japanese island of Yakushima. Check out the trailer on RBMA's website.
