En Route to Governors Ball 2013 by Oliver Correa

New York City, New York -- Well, Governors Ball Music Festival is this weekend and we couldn't be more excited. With headliners like Outkast, Jack White, Vampire Weekend, and The Strokes, you can expect this growing festival staple to rule. To prepare for 2014's comeback, we thought we'd take a moment to remember the successes and challenges of last year's Gov Ball, so feel free to reminisce with us while you get ready for this weekend.

If there's one thing everyone remembers about Gov Ball 2013, it's the goddamn, m-f-ing, soul-crushing rain. Our review covers how Randall's Island was pounded with precipitation for the first two days of the festival, and how the promoters made a miraculous recovery moving set times around, keeping fans in the loop via social media updates, and hosting a sunny and successful Sunday.

Check out our Day 1 Photo Gallery for the inevitable shots of festivalgoers in raincoats and ponchos as well as photos of St. Lucia, Poli├ža, Holy Ghost!, Best Coast, and Of Monsters and Men. The Day 2 Gallery features some advice written in mud ("Beware Mudd Sharks!") and shots of MS MR, Icona Pop, Japandroids, Divine Fits, Alt-J, Cut Copy, Azaelia Banks, Kendrick Lamar, Animal Collective, Thievery Corporation, and DJ Green Lantern & Nas. And finally, the sun came out for Day 3 with performances from HAIM, Steel Pulse, Cold War Kids, Twin Shadow, Gary Clark Jr., Beirut, Grizzly Bear, Bloc Party, The xx, and The Avett Brothers.

Aside from the mud, we overheard some interesting things from Gov Ball 2013, like how Bradford Cox had his fly down for most of the Deerhunter set, or how it was "...too rainy for Molly today." We also spotted some noticeable trends, and who knew wearing flowers in your hair would make a resurgence post-1971?

I expect you're all as pumped for Gov Ball 2014 as I am at this point. To further prepare, check out our playlist of all the artists on the lineup, our best boozy Brooklyn brunches, the best late night eats near the official after parties, our 8 suggestions for the most painful set conflicts this year, and, of course, our Gov Ball 2014 Festival Guide
