South by Southwest 2012

SXSW Music is a music industry staple in the US, drawing tens of thousands of visitors to Austin for a week of music showcases, panels, and speakers. The festival features 2,000 musical acts, representing 50 countries.

March in Austin is warm and sunny, and the city itself is well-suited for SXSW. Even though showcases are spread out over 90 stages, the festival is concentrated in a small area that very easy to navigate on foot. During the week of SXSW, Austin’s main thoroughfare, South 6th Street, is closed to cars, which creates a vibrant atmosphere, swirling with music, people, and of course, food trucks.

How do I get to and from the festival?

If you are staying in the downtown area, you can easily walk to the various festival sites; but if you’re staying further away, we suggest buying the five-day Hotel Shuttle pass for $40. Operated by R&R Limo and Bus, an official SXSW partner, the shuttle covers the entire music festival, and goes to approximately 40 hotels across Austin. How do I get around during the event?

6th Street is closed to traffic, so walking is by far the best way to get around once you get to the downtown area; just make sure you have comfortable shoes.

What time does it start and end?

Events in the convention center start as early as 9am, but many music shows won’t start until 1pm. The last official shows start at midnight, but rest assured, there are plenty of after parties in the area.

Reentry is allowed as long as you have proof of entry with you.

Are there any prohibited items?

Like most venues and bars, you can’t bring in outside food, beverage, weapons, etc. There is a no-open container law in Austin, so plan accordingly if you’ll be venue hopping with alcohol.

Can I bring outside food and/or drink?

Venues, bars, and the convention center will not allow outside food or drink, but if you walk down 6th street, you can take in the crowds and eat to your hearts content.

Will there be food sold at the event?

There will be plenty of food around downtown Austin. If you’re planning on a sit-down restaurant, give yourself a least an hour before the show since they’ll be busy. If you’re in a rush, Austin has some amazing food trucks (Torchy’s is highly recommended for tacos), making it easy to eat and run. And whatever you do, don’t leave the state without indulging in some Texas BBQ and Tex-Mex.

What do I need to know about money?

Credit cards can be used at many of the bars and restaurants, but it’s a good idea to keep some cash on you to avoid waits. Like any city, ATMs are easily accessible around downtown Austin.

What will the weather be like?

March in Austin is usually pleasant, with highs around 70°F during the day, and lows around 50°F at night. Luckily, many of the venues are indoors or covered, in case of rain.

What should I wear?

Good walking shoes are a must. Shorts and t-shirts are a staple during the day, and it’s a good idea to bring light jacket if you’ll be walking around at night.

What should I bring?

You might want to bring a pair of earplugs, if you don’t want your ears to be ringing after taking in 30+ bands. Grab a couple pairs at the convention center, or at the nearest CVS. There are plenty of stores in the Austin area, ranging from electronics to clothing, if you forget to pack something.

Anything else I need to know?

While you don’t necessarily need a conference badge to survive the week, it makes getting into events a lot easier. If you want to attend any official SXSW panels, then registering for a badge is an absolute must. For official music showcases, badge holders are given priority for venue admittance, followed by people with wristbands, who are admitted on a "space available" basis. If you don’t have a badge or a wristband, you can also pay a $5-$25 cover charge, but you will be given the lowest priority for admittance.

With tens of thousands of SXSW attendees, there can be some stiff competition to get into the top events. Without a wristband or badge, you probably won’t be able to see the more recognizable bands, but you will see a lot of great new music. If a band or event is on your must-see-list, get to the venue early or be prepared with a solid back-up plan, just in case you don’t get in. Many artists play more than one event, so if you plan it right, you can try to catch them at a daytime gig that may be easier to get into.

Badges are significantly more expensive, but if you can swing it, they’re worth it. In addition to priority admission to the shows, the Music Badge allows you access to the Music Conference, including keynotes and panels by industry leaders, as well as the trade show, dinners, and other networking opportunities.

Still, there are tons of free events that don’t require a badge or wristband, many of which have open bars and/or free food. Sign up for as many mailing lists as you can, that way, you’ll be the first to know when RSVPs open for these events. The Fader Fort is known to be one of the best independent events, just make sure you RSVP and pick up your free wristband early in the week.

If you don’t have a badge (and therefore don’t have access to a coveted SXSW conference guide), pick up the local paper each morning ‐ they print a comprehensive event schedule that will be invaluable as you plan your day.

Finally, SXSW runs a tight ship; sets generally run on schedule to keep pace with the hundreds of events that happen simultaneously. Do not worry vegetarians, we have indeed kept you in mind. Texas is known to be a meat heavy state, but Texans do know how to whip up some delicious vegetarian and vegan friendly food. Sleep

There is so much to see and do during SXSW that you probably won’t be sleeping much. For some people this means a barebones, cheap place to crash. This hotel is a little far from the main 6th Street insanity of Austin, but it has great rates compared to other hotels in the area and is a short cab ride away from the main drag. The InterContinental is one of those legendary hotels in Austin where the music truly comes to life. Hotels fill up months in advance of SXSW, but there are other, and sometimes better options, like renting a house, apartment, or a room from AirBnB. The website is a community marketplace for short-term rentals, with customer reviews, photos and a secure payment system. Those staying with a large group of friends can take advantage of unique spaces, and lower prices compare to area hotels.
Craigslist
Many Austin residents leave town during SXSW and are happy to rent out their place to make some money. Look into University of Texas housing as students may be going home for their Spring Break.

Shop

Texas may be known for its 10-gallon hats and cowboy boots, but Austin has its own fashion and art scene, in addition to all the great music found around the city. Don’t miss out on the unique galleries and boutiques within walking distance of SXSW.

Explore

Austin offers plenty to see outside of SXSW. This city of over 700,000 people sets itself apart from the rest of Texas as an epicenter of alternative culture. Get away from the crowds and loud music and take in nature, see the city from the perspective of a bike or kayak. Austin may be marketed as the “Live Music Capital of the World" due to the large number of venues, but there are plenty of other sites to make you fall in love with the city.

Just down the road from the boat rentals is Zilker Park’s 358 acres including the incredible three-acre “pool.” The pool is fed from underground springs and is on average 68°F (20°C) year round, perfect for those hot Texas days. You can spend the day getting tan, drinking a beer, and splashing around a large lake-like pool ‐ this is one of those things you must do during your stay in Austin. At only $3 per day for adults, it’s difficult to find cheaper fun anywhere in the city.

If you would like to delve into a bit of history during you Texas stay, why not check out the capital building? This building was designed back in 1881 and was finally completed in 1888. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 1986. The capital rotunda features portraits of every person who has served as president of the Republic of Texas or Governor of the state of Texas. This giant building is a masterful work of art, but so is the surrounding area. There are 22 acres of beautifully landscaped lawns, 17 monuments, and stunning historical buildings.
