Coachella 2013

Photo: Coachella 2012 by Oliver Correa
The Coachella Music and Arts Festival is one of the most visually and aurally stunning festivals in North America and after, not only one, but two successful weekends in 2012, a newly announced cruise-festival-hybrid, and 2013 advanced passes that sold-out a year in advance - there's no doubt Coachella is among the most successful as well. With so much demand and hype surrounding the event, we've revamped our Coachella festival guide to make your experience the best it can possibly be; before, after, and during the festival.

How do I get to and from Indio?
If you're flying in, the closest airport to Coachella is the Palm Springs International Airport (PSP), which is about 20 miles away. However, even though it's the closest, you should keep in mind The Palm Springs International Airport is small. So, depending on where you are coming from, you may have to connect at a larger airport hub beforehand. Alternatively, you can fly into the LA area airports, which, although further away from the festival, may have cheaper flight options. Your best bets are the Ontario International Airport (ONT) (90 miles from Indio), the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) (about 146 miles away), and the San Diego International Airport (SAN) (about 85 miles away.) Once you're at the airport you'll need to find your way into Indio on the ground.
If you are driving to Coachella, check the festival's provided driving directions for your quickest route.
If you prefer to travel by bus, you're in luck. There is a Greyhound bus stop as well as a Crucero bus stop in Indio. The Greyhound buses offer service to and from LA and Pheonix and it stops 6 miles from the festival site. Once there you can catch a ride or take a taxi to the festival grounds. Crucero buses offer service to and from LA, Mexicali, and Pheonix.
If you are traveling by train, Amtrak is your best bet. While there is no train station within Indio, there is a Palm Springs Train Station and an Amtrak Bus Stop in Indio. You can use The Amtrak Trip Planner to see which trains and thruway buses are best for you. -
What neighborhood is the festival in? How do I get around the area?
Coachella festival takes place in Indio, CA - part of the Coachella Valley in Southern California. The valley stretches 300 sq miles eastward from Palm Springs.
The easiest way to get around Indio and its surrounding towns is by driving. There are car rental companies at the airports (the closest of which is the Palm Springs International Airport (PSP)) from which you can book even of you're not flying in. We highly recommend making reservations before arriving to be assured a car. Avis and Budget are offering festival goers special discounts. These discounts are good from one week before to one week after the event. You can use the codes below when making your reservation.
Avis Worldwide Discount(AWD) Number: W973598
Budget Customer Discount (BCD) Number: Z523098
Coachella strongly recommends carpooling, which they affectionately refer to as Carpoolchella. So, if you know someone that will be driving, don't be afraid to ask for a ride! It's a great way to bond with fellow festivalgoers before the event and it's eco-friendly too. You can also checkout Zimride, a ridesharing tool that Coachella is encouraging festivalgoers to use. On the site, you can connect with other festivalgoers who are either offering a spot in their car or looking for a ride as well.
To get around Indio or to and from your hotel you can also take a cab. The Drop off and Pick up point is Madison / 52. Here are some local cab companies servicing Coachella:
American Cab: 760-322-4444
Yellow Cab of the Desert: 760-340-TAXI (8294)
Desert City Cab: 760-328-3000
There will also be hotel shuttles to and from the festival. You can purchase a shuttle pass, either separately or as a package with your GA or VIP ticket, and get more info here. The shuttles are divided into 8 color-coded lines, which you have to specify at the time of purchase, so make sure you know where you are staying first before booking the shuttle. -
What time does it start and end?
The opening and closing times for the campground differ from the festival ground itself. For both weekends, the campsite will open on Thursday at 9am and close at noon the following Monday. Gates to the festival grounds open each morning at 11am, and the music generally ends around midnight.
-
Is reentry allowed?
Reentry is permitted between the campsite and the festival grounds throughout the weekend, but, if you leave the entire area (whether you are camping or not), you are not guaranteed reentry until the next day.
-
Are there any prohibited Items?
Prohibited Within Festival Site
Instruments, Weapons, Chains, Fireworks, Blankets, Outside Food & Beverages, Tents, Flags, Stuffed Animals, Sharpies, Drugs, Pets, Chairs, Camelpacks, Umbrellas, Water Guns, Oversized Backpacks, and any professional camera, video, or audio recording devices are not allowed at Coachella.
Prohibited Within Campsite
You cannot bring Wrapped/Sponsored Vehicles, Glass Containers, Weapons, Drugs, Animals, Open Flames, Tiki Torches, or Fireworks into the campsite. -
What's the deal with food and beverages?
If you are camping, you are encouraged to bring your own food and drinks, which will help you save some money. However, you cannot bring your personal food from your tent into the event; only sealed plastic water bottles are permitted. If you don't want to pack your own food, or if you find you didn't bring enough, you can head to the main food row within the campsite, where a farmers market, a general store cafe, a full-service restaurant, and a breakfast buffet can be found. You can also take advantage of the free supermarket shuttles, running from Lot 4 between 7am-1:30pm each day.
Once inside the festival, food options will be plentiful for vegetarians, vegans, omnivores, and carnivores alike. Full-scale, sit-down restaurants can be found in The Terrace, and food trucks and vendors will be scattered throughout the festival grounds. here's a list of all the food vendors present.
Alcohol will also be readily available once within the festival grounds at a number of beer gardens as well as at the round bar - which will offer the most extensive full bar in the venue. VIP ticket-holders can take advantage of the Rose Garden VIP options, including the Rose Garden, the Lawn Lounge Area, The Lounge Bar, The Bubbly Bar, and the Pavillion. -
What do I need to know about money?
Credit cards aren't accepted within the festival grounds (except at the VIP bars) and, while ATMs are available both in the campsite and around the festival, the lines are often quite long and service fees can be quite expensive. So plan on bringing a fair amount of cash for any food, drinks, or merch you may want to purchase.
-
What will the weather be like?
The average April temperature ranges from 61°F-88°F (16°C-31°C) in Indio, but the days can often get into the mid 90s under the hot desert sun. The chance of rain is minimal during this time of year - although it did rain on the first day of the festival last year so you may want to come prepared (umbrellas aren't allowed), especially if you're camping.
Click for weather forecast -
What should I wear?
Coachella is just as well known for its celebrity and fashionista attendees as it is for its music. Thus, while not necessary, many tend to dress in their best festival fashion - opting for designer duds and quirky vintage finds rather than more comfortable, practical attire. If you want to go this route, go for it - then scour the fashion sites for a snap of yourself afterwards. But don't feel as though it's a requirement. You will also be sure to find many on the complete opposite side of the spectrum - campers sporting what they slept in, unshowered and unwashed hippies, and those that just don't give a damn.
Whatever route you choose to take, keep in mind Coachella takes place in the desert. Temperatures can get quite high and dry, especially under the scorching sun. That being said, the Coachella Valley is also known to get significantly cooler once the sun goes down - a light jacket or sweater will serve you well. -
What should I bring?
Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect you from the desert sun; a non-professional digital camera to document your fun; a cell phone and charger (charging stations are available) to keep in touch with your group in case you get separated; cash to avoid ATM lines and service fees; and a non-metal, non-glass refillable water bottle to stay hydrated are all great things to bring into the festival grounds.
If you are camping at Coachella, consider packing these 7 Essential Items for Low-Maintenance Grooming while camping - and don't forget a tent.. -
Does the festival have a mobile app?
Coachella comes out with an updated mobile app prior to the festival each year. While the 2013 version is yet to be released, you can check out our test drive of the 2012 Coachella app for a peek into what to expect.
-

Anything else I need to know?
If you are driving and want to avoid the inevitable traffic when leaving the festival's free daily parking, you can pay $15-$40 to park in one of the side lots and walk to the festival gates.
Campers note you must be 18 or older to camp at Coachella unless you have a parent or guardian attending the festival with you. You can check in at the campsite between 9am and 2am the Thursday before the festival and between 9am and 11pm Friday-Sunday. Even if you are attending both Coachella weekends, you have to vacate your campsite the week between.

Eat
The festival organizers at Coachella have curated one of the best food spreads of any major music festival in the US; you won’t have to subsist on granola bars stuffed into the bottom of your bag. There are plenty of traditional festival options, but also unexpected cuisines like Thai, Mexican, Middle Eastern, and Greek. In addition to the vendors and food trucks spread around the venue, Coachella provides restaurant-style, sit-down options .
For those camping at Coachella, you'll take solace in knowing you won't be left hungry if you didn't bring enough for the entire weekend or if your options get a bit unappetizing after left in a hot car for a few days. The campgrounds feature a Main Food Row where you can get everything from coffee and breakfast to hot dogs and vegetarian meals. There is also a certified farmer's market, a general store cafe, a breakfast buffet, and a full service restaurant. To check out all the options available both in the campgrounds and in the festival itself, head to Coachella's Food & Beverage page.
When you're not at the festival, there are plenty of options in the Coachella Valley and in Indio, Palm Desert, and Palm Springs. The restaurants below are all only a short drive or cab ride away from Coachella and are conveniently located near our Coachella Sleep Suggestions.

Sleep
Coachella is first and foremost a camping festival. On-Site Camping Options range from car-side campsites to exclusive safari tents. RV camping is not available onsite but is possible at the nearby off-site campgrounds. But if pitching a tent and living out of the trunk of your car doesn't sound appealing, don't fret. There are plenty of hotel options, ranging from luxury resorts to budget accommodations, in the surrounding towns.
In addition to On-Site Camping Options, Coachella also offers Hotel Travel Packages for both weekends. We have listed these hotels below along with other area options, which are mainly located in Palm Springs, for you to choose from.

Shop
Palm Springs is equally as well known for its vintage-thrift stores and antique showrooms as it is for its high-end shopping and art galleries; so there really is something for every price range and taste around Coachella. On this list, we've included more options on the thrift side of the spectrum, most located on Palm Canyon Drive, as the more high-end boutiques and chain retailers are concentrated along El Paseo.
For shopping within the festival itself, there will be merchandise tents, an on-site boutique, a vintage Coachella merch warehouse sale, and general stores for anything you need (or want) during the festival weekend.

Party
Indio isn't exactly a nightlife city. Most of your partying will be done at the festival itself or at one of the after parties, which are usually held at surrounding hotels.
All of our recommendations are within Palm Springs or Palm Desert and the majority of them reside within hotels. So if you want to continue partying after the festival ends each night, it's a good idea to select an accommodation that also includes a bar, lounge, or nightclub.
